WE TAKE THE FIRST STEP
The first step to be taken in helping victims find a pathway to freedom is taken by us. We think this first step is critical because other steps may not occur without it. When we take the first step it communicates "you are not forgotten, you have importance, and you're worth coming for."
Throughout the month, WOA outreach teams drive the streets of downtown Cincinnati and Hamilton, OH., searching for women and men who appear to be vulnerable and victimized. When they spot someone who appears to need help they offer them food, water, hygiene items and Narcan kits (depending on availability). As items are distributed, the team intentionally engages in conversation that will initiate personal relationships. Through developing personal relationships our new friends learn we care and they can trust us. Once they believe we care and can be trusted they will typically take the next step. The next step would be to visit one of our day centers.
HOPE BEYOND US
At the end of every street encounter, we offer to pray with those we encounter. Most eagerly accept it, but if they prefer we don't, we respect their wishes. Interestingly enough, when we encounter them again, they initiate the request for prayer.
